Be Your Friend

FriendSpeak

If you had a friend who spoke to you in the same way
that you sometimes speak to yourself,
how long would you allow that person
to be your friend?

I admit that I catch myself in that negative self-talk cycle. “Why did I do that? What the heck is wrong with me?”

What’s worse is when it goes on for minutes and I don’t catch myself.

Eckhart Tolle urges us to be in the “now.” Buddhism calls it being mindful. However you choose to look at where you should be in each moment, where are you exactly?

Are you off in the future anticipating that plan, that great dream of yours?

Are you visiting your past, beating yourself up for having said something unkind to someone?

Or worse. Stuck in the past because someone said something unkind to you?

It has been said that each time you replay some hurtful scene from your past, you are allowing it to happen to you all over again. You are allowing that person to hurt you again…and again…and again.

Every single time you think about it, that’s what is happening.

If someone has done something to you that was hurtful, don’t replay it in your mind. Don’t live through that pain again. Your body doesn’t really like it, and you know your mind doesn’t like it either.

Be kind to yourself today, right now, in this moment.

Because, in this exact moment, there is peacefulness and you are perfect just as you are.

An article by Sara Childre, President, Institute of HeartMath

Now and then we all take a moment to look at the life we are living and daydream about how our futures will look. So, take one of those moments right now, and rather than “thinking” about what the future might look like based on your life as it is now, do the following:

Look as deeply as you can into your heart and visualize the future you’ve always truly desired, the one that fills your heart with joy whenever you imagine it.

In that simple exercise, you have glimpsed what HeartMath calls your heart blueprint.

I stumbled upon the film Inner Worlds Outer Worlds (by Daniel Schmidt) on Youtube. It’s new to me, perhaps to you as well.

It’s an incredible piece, professionally done (with beautiful music), and freely available to everyone.

What’s it about?

Excerpt from “Be Who You Want to Be by Realizing You’re Not Who You Think,” by Melinda Csikos, posted on Tiny Buddha.

I believe we all go through dark phases when our image of ourselves breaks and we start thinking less of ourselves. This phase can pass after some time if we let it, but if we insist on clinging to the picture of ourselves in our minds, it will be harder to get through it.

The good news is: you are whoever you choose to be.

It’s not a coincidence that all the great spiritual masters spoke about detaching from our thoughts. Our thoughts do not represent reality. We are the ones who choose to believe that they are real, when, in fact, they have nothing to do with reality.

No matter what situation life presents us, we can always choose to view ourselves the way we want.

You can either view yourself as a victim or as the hero who lived through all the controversy. It’s all a matter of perspective.

Even though I don’t have a television or subscribe to cable or any other entertainment site, I do occasionally watch movies from my DVD or digital collection.

I get in a zone when I watch a movie. I can block out the world around me. I pay particular attention to every nuance, background scene, clothing, body language, sets, and, of course, the words of the characters.

I don’t own a television. I got rid of that in 2006 after cutting myself off from cable services in the late 90’s. So, I’m a little lost as to what’s playing on television. This is really obvious when I’m with a crowd of friends who start talking about this or that show on TV. Or the laughing that ensues as everyone discusses a funny commercial they saw.
