Choices, Decisions, Expectation, Thoughts

We all have decisions to make. We all have choices.

When it comes to making a decision, deep down, we really know what we are going to choose. But if you are ever in a bind and need some help, this trick works every time.

CoinToss

When faced with two choices, simply toss a coin.
It works not because it settles the question for you, but because,
in that brief moment when the coin is in the air, you suddenly
know what you are hoping for.

I love the bit below by Micheál Ledwith (from the movie, What the Bleep Do We Know). It’s a reminder to keep my thoughts out of the past – what can appear comfortable – and put my being in the here and now.

I say comfortable because there comes a certain comfort from rehashing the past. It’s like walking into a room full of people and we know everyone who’s there.

I don’t own a television. I got rid of that in 2006 after cutting myself off from cable services in the late 90’s. So, I’m a little lost as to what’s playing on television. This is really obvious when I’m with a crowd of friends who start talking about this or that show on TV. Or the laughing that ensues as everyone discusses a funny commercial they saw.

How do we see the world?

People have been studying this for thousands of years now.

Not only do our eyes lie to us, but our brains have been conditioned to process the eyes’ electrical signals in a certain way. The brain has been trained to accept the lies or, at best, fill in the missing pieces with information that conforms to our beliefs so that what results is a “picture” that makes us feel both comfortable and safe.

“Change the way you look at things, and the things you look at change.”
– Dr Wayne Dyer

Implicit in this statement is “choice.”

We must actively (proactively!) choose to see things differently, otherwise we are choosing (by default) to see things as they appear. And as they appear is almost always not what they truly are.

No. Not really. And I really don’t think people want what’s wrong, but somehow wrong happens.

I was watching Yuttadhammo Bhikkhu on Youtube when I found my mind drifting onto the “want” issue (I know, that’s not very “present” of me).

I found myself starting to dislike the word, or rather what it stood for.

What are you imagining for yourself right now?

Are you thinking today’s going to be a struggle? Or are you imagining that things are going to be great?

Is it just another battle to be fought today? Or did you smile as you got out of bed, deeply knowing that whatever comes you’re going to greet it with a cheerful attitude?

Expectation, Good

So, I was downtown Portland (the east coast one) running some errands today, and I decided to stop by a friend’s shop. The shop’s located on a side street right downtown, and the parking is usually very sparse around her place. So much so, that I usually just park in the No Parking or Loading Zone spots along the street. Then I stand by her all-glass storefront and keep an eye on my car. Even on weekends, the Ticket Masters (ahem, ticket police) are out in force and, on nice days, patrolling the streets on bicycles.
