Alan Watts, Belief

“Supposing I say to you: each one of you is really the Great Self, the Brahman. And you say, ‘All you’ve said up to now makes me fairly sympathetic to this intellectually. But I don’t really feel it. What must I do to feel it really?’ My answer to you is this: you ask me that question because you don’t want to feel it really. You’re frightened of it. And therefore what you’re going to do is you’re going to get a method of practice so you can put it off. So you can say, ‘Well, I can be a long time on the way of getting this thing, then maybe I’ll be worthy of it after I have suffered enough. See, because we are brought up in a social scheme where we have to deserve what we get and the price one pays for all good things is suffering. But all that is precisely postponement because one is afraid, here and now to see it.”
– Alan Watts

Alan Watts (1915-1973) was prolic in his lifetime, producing books, audios and videos. You can find his works all over the web, even Youtube (typically audio only).

His son, Mark, maintains a website of his works.

If you’re unfamiliar with Watts, check out Wikipedia’s entry on him.

Most of you have probably heard this story, in one variation or another, but I think it’s worth keeping in the back of the mind.

I heard a slightly different version of this story about 15 years ago and it has never left me. Of course, I can’t say I really focused on the theme of it in my life to any great extent, but it’s been filed away there.

“Your concept of yourself is all that you accept and consent to as true. What you consent to can only be discovered by an uncritical observation of your reactions to life. Your reactions reveal where you live psychologically; and where you live psychologically, determines how you live here in the outer visible world.”
– Neville Goddard

“Change the way you look at things, and the things you look at change.”
– Dr Wayne Dyer

Implicit in this statement is “choice.”

We must actively (proactively!) choose to see things differently, otherwise we are choosing (by default) to see things as they appear. And as they appear is almost always not what they truly are.

Like so many other people, I have a list of words that I try very hard not to use. For the most part, they’re easy to avoid. One word that takes more concentration than others on my list is “hope.” *

I’ve looked for synonyms, but none really satisfy the requirements of this single, simple word. So, I fall back on the good ole’ standby, “trust.” As in, “I trust you had a good time.”

Your Passionate Power
From Dr. Wayne Dyer

Here’s a concept you won’t want to forget: passion always trumps excuses. Keep in mind that when I use the word passion, I’m not referring to the romantic notions that this concept conjures. Instead, I’m equating it to a vigorous kind of enthusiasm that you feel deep within you and that isn’t easy to explain or define. This kind of passion propels you in a direction that seems motivated by a force beyond your control. It’s the inner excitement of being on the right path, doing what feels good to you, and what you know you were meant to do.

No. Not really. And I really don’t think people want what’s wrong, but somehow wrong happens.

I was watching Yuttadhammo Bhikkhu on Youtube when I found my mind drifting onto the “want” issue (I know, that’s not very “present” of me).

I found myself starting to dislike the word, or rather what it stood for.
